As much as I love reading the latest bite-sized post about herbal medicine, I’ve always used books as my primary source of knowledge. Call me old school but there’s nothing like tackling an in-depth text with a highlighter and a glass of wine. Bonus points if you use sticky tabs.
I’ve been through a lot of books about herbal medicine, some better than others, and I get asked a lot from newbies where they should start. If you’re overwhelmed with the options available to you here is a short list of 5 life changing books about herbal medicine. Well, they certainly were life changing for me and I hope they will be for you too.
Rosemary Gladstar’s Herbal Recipes for Vibrant Health: 175 Teas, Tonics, Oils, Salves, Tinctures, and Other Natural Remedies for the Entire Family
This is the perfect book for beginners. It offers simple but effective remedies for everything from stress relief to earaches. Rosemary includes nine chapters and two appendixes. The first appendix is an A-Z guide to herbs and the second is dedicated to making remedies.
Chapters cover stress, everyday ailments, beauty, children, women, men, and elders. She has a storytelling tone throughout the book which makes it an interesting read and a nice break from more clinical books. My favorite section is the children’s chapter, which includes a great fever-reducing tea and a nifty disinfectant powder for ouchies.

Are you ready to get the toxins out of your life?
Adaptogens are plants that help you adapt to the everyday stresses your body encounters. These can be emotional, environmental, or physical stressors. I fell in love with adaptogens primarily from reading this book.
I am still amazed at the power of adaptogens to help a body adapt to whatever is thrown at it. This book offers everything from history to monographs, to case studies, there is even a chapter on animals. You’ll no doubt find the perfect plant for your unique challenges.
Herbal Antivirals: Natural Remedies for Emerging & Resistant Viral Infections– Stephen Harrod Buhner
This detailed and somewhat clinical book covers a variety of plants that will help you fend off any virus. I have a lot of books, but these two from Stephen Buhner have been hands down the most useful, and contain the most unique content of any I’ve read.
This book offers in-depth sections covering each antiviral plant, its safety, and uses. Stephen has also included a ton of data and available research on each plant. There is also a section that includes supportive herbs and an excellent section on the treatment of influenza. I recommend this reference book for every family.
Herbal Antibiotics: Natural Alternatives for Treating Drug-Resistant Bacteria – Stephen Harrod Buhner
This book can save your life. That’s not an overstatement. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria have taken the lives of countless people and have become a prominent threat to every human alive today. And the threat is only growing worse, modern medicine has run out of effective antibiotics as bacteria adapt to an overuse of them and now have developed deadly resistance.
If there were only one book you could afford, I’d recommend buying this one. Even more impressive Stephen includes plants that I’ve rarely seen (or never seen) referenced anywhere else. His depth of knowledge is truly impressive.
If you are ready to take your herbal game to the next level, I highly recommend this textbook all about the science and clinical use of herbal medicine. While this isn’t for everyone it has been invaluable to me and many others.
This book is particularly useful when considering side effects and dealing with more complex situations. Understanding the science behind the plants will help you know how to adapt the herbs for each unique situation.
