Most people are completely oblivious to the number of toxins hiding in their home. It’s pretty scary once you start tallying everything up and realize you are living in a toxic soup.
If you have kids in your home it’s even more critical that you clean house. But this isn’t about freaking you out. This is about giving you some easy tools to make your world a bit healthier and Filtered. Here are some easy kitchen swaps to keep your home toxin-free.
1. Swap plastic containers for glass or ceramic
Plastic containers are known for containing harmful toxins including BPA, an estrogen-like chemical that can disrupt hormones. Even BPA-free containers aren’t safe as they have also been found to leak estrogenic chemicals. Heating them (like in a microwave) or putting hot food in them makes these toxins more likely to be released.

2. Swap toxic non-stick cookware for stainless steel or cast iron
Non-stick is notoriously toxic. So toxic in fact that owners of pet birds can’t use the cookware as the birds can (and do) drop dead from the fumes. According to the EWG
‘Toxic fumes from the Teflon chemical released from pots and pans at high temperatures may kill pet birds and cause people to develop flu-like symptoms (called “Teflon Flu” or, as scientists describe it, “Polymer fume fever”).”
Despite this little fact, these pans are still being sold in stores everywhere. I see them in kitchens way more often than I’d like.
Instead of basting my food in toxins use stainless steel for almost everything. As a cook and former restaurant owner this is the cookware set I love and use most often. It’s durable, well made, and makes a great non-toxic investment.
Cast iron cookware is also a good choice, albeit heavy and a bit high maintenance.
Enameled cast iron, like this Le Creuset set, is also a good option (but at a ridiculous price).
As for baking, instead of non-stick baking dishes switch to glass, like this glass baking set that I use. See, easy-peasy!

3. Swap conventional hand soap for toxin-free soap
Conventional hand soap does much more harm than good. In particular the antibacterial hand soaps that contain triclosan are particularly worrisome. According to the EWG
“The main reason to avoid anti-bacterial soaps is its active ingredient: triclosan (and the related triclocarbon). Triclosan is an anti-bacterial chemical found in many consumer products, and it’s nearly ubiquitous in liquid hand soap. It is linked to liver and inhalation toxicity, and even low levels of triclosan may disrupt thyroid function. Further, the American Medical Association recommends that triclosan not be used in the home, as it may encourage bacterial resistance to antibiotics.”
4. Swap conventional dish soap for toxin-free soap
You probably know where this is going. That bright green bottle of grease cutting soap is also likely to contain a bunch of toxins. Toxins that can leave dangerous residue on your dishes and whose fumes can irritate eyes and lungs. I’m so used to natural soap that when I use conventional soap (like at a friend’s house) my eyes start to water and my nose starts to run.
I find this brand is A rated by EWG, great at cutting grease, and doesn’t have a bunch of nasty ingredients.
5. Swap conventional kitchen cleaner for toxin-free cleaner
Rounding out our list it’s time to toss your kitchen cleaner. These vary in toxicity, but if they aren’t natural then you are probably spraying toxins all over your kitchen.
Go with a natural version like Earth Friendly Products Orange Plus Cleaner, Ecover Cream Scrub, or Whole Foods Market All Purpose Cleaner in Citrus brand. All three of these products are A rated by EWG for toxicity.
If you want to check the toxicity of your products, check EWG’s database. You’ll probably be surprised at what you find.
There you go. Five super simple swaps to live a little cleaner and a bit more Filtered. These steps aren’t that difficult and can make a big difference in your wellness. The journey to a healthier home is all about baby steps.
